HOMEOWNER DISTRESS EDUCATION

Understanding the Homeowner Distress Lifecycle

A general overview of the stages a homeowner may move through from financial difficulty to a potential post-sale claim.

A general lifecycle

Homeowner financial distress often unfolds in stages: an initial period of missed payments or mounting debt, communication and, in some cases, negotiation with a lender or tax authority, a potential foreclosure or tax sale if the underlying issue is not resolved, and, in some cases, a period afterward when questions about remaining value or proceeds may arise.

Why the later stage is often overlooked

Understandably, much of the public attention and available resources focus on helping homeowners avoid a forced sale in the first place. Less attention is generally paid to what can happen afterward, including the possibility that value may remain even after a sale has occurred.

Where this resource hub fits in

This resource hub is focused primarily on that later stage — helping former owners, heirs, and families understand what may be possible after a tax sale or foreclosure has already occurred.
