How to Recognize Recovery Scams

Common warning signs associated with scams targeting former property owners and heirs.

General warning signs

While not every red flag means a scam, general warning signs can include requests for upfront payment before any funds are located or confirmed, pressure to sign documents or wire money immediately, refusal to provide documentation supporting the existence of funds, requests for sensitive information (such as a Social Security number) very early in the conversation without explanation, and contact information that cannot be independently verified.

What legitimate outreach generally looks like

Legitimate recovery outreach generally includes a way to verify the company's identity, a willingness to let you take time and consult independent counsel, and a clear explanation of how any fee arrangement works.

If something feels wrong

If you are ever uncertain, it is reasonable to pause, independently verify information using public records, and consult an attorney or trusted advisor before proceeding.
