FAMILIES & ESTATES
Documents Families May Need
Examples of documentation that families are often asked to gather when researching a potential claim.
Commonly requested documents
While specific requirements vary by jurisdiction and custodian, families researching a potential property proceeds claim are often asked to gather documents such as a certified death certificate for a deceased former owner, a copy of any will, letters testamentary or letters of administration if an estate has been opened, government-issued identification for each heir, and documentation showing the family relationship to the former owner.
Property-related records
Records related to the property itself — such as the deed, prior tax bills, or foreclosure notices — can also be useful in confirming the connection between a family and a specific property.
Every situation is different
Not every document listed here will apply in every situation, and additional documentation may be required depending on the county, court, or lender involved.
